Terrific and inexpensive little Salvadorean eat-in and take out. I usually order some vegetarian pupusas (frijol con queso) which comes with a tasty slaw (cabbage) and spicy dressing. Quality is very good. Even for simple orders, a waitress will bring your food out with real flatware, not plastic. Tables and atmosphere are IKEA-ish, and they have a flat screen on one wall with the latest Hispanic soap opera or game show while they cook your food. Nice local feel, and a fair number of customers are Latinos who live in Takoma and Silver Spring. I'd give it an extra star, but one girl on staff doesn't comprehend the meaning of vegetarian, so I had to send an order back once. I had to complain to the manager to straighten it out. But otherwise, very nice staff and service.

Figured I would check this place out since I live close by and saw the good reviews on here. I've been to the Peruvian chicken place next door which is OK - I always liked the grandaddy of them all El Pollo Rico in Wheaton the best, it's a shame its gone - but had not yet tried Sabor. Well I'm kicking myself now for not getting here sooner. I had the pollo tacos and they were some of the best I have had so far in the DC area. Tender chicken topped with shaved radish on a homemade hot off the grill tortilla served with a side of salsa verde. I added a little yucateco red sauce for heat. The homemade tortilla really stands out here and was the highlight of the meal. I washed it down with a tamarindo which complimented the yucateco habanero sauce nicely. I for see many trips here in the future as I live right by here and find myself on foot in the flower-piney branch area several times a week for one reason or another. As for the area, I live and grew up here and can assure you that yes it is a little dumpy, but I don't think it is because it is an immigrant area, it's been that way as long as I can remember, and I can remember when the flower theatre actually played movies. If the aesthetics of the area keep it from becoming yuppified that's fine with me, if I want new clean and bland I'll go to Bethesda.

My daughter ordered their Plantanos Maduros con Crema & Frijoles off of the picture menu, and a selection of pork, chicken and cheese pupusas. Took about 10 minutes to prepare from scratch, not as fast as the pupusa trucks outside in the same neighborhood, which we also enjoy when in a rush. However, Sabor's was worth the wait, enjoyed their more extensive menu, put together a nice combo plate at home, everything was very fresh and tasty. Really enjoyed their slaw - with fresh jalapeno. Total for the three of us $15. Stopped in around 6:30PM on a weeknight and it was not crowded but the kitchen had the grill covered with tortillas, you may buy them to go. $0.35 each, $5 = 16, .... Maybe the bulk of their crowd is not on the standard rush hour schedule, as it looks like they are doing very well.

*********3.5********* This place is located in the southwest corner of the Piney Branch Rd. and Flower Ave. intersection, in the same strip as the Domino's pizza. My new partner in crime Misun M. and I came here for lunch. We were both hungry! I wanted breakfast, she wanted lunch. I settled for their Huevos Rancheros and she got the Carne Asada. We also got a tamal de elote, cheese pupusa and pupusa con loroco. My huevos rancheros were simple, two over easy eggs atop a corn tortilla covered in a red tomato sauce. The sauce was pretty good, I would have liked it to be spicier, but that's a personal preference. Wish they had hot sauce on the side at least. The eggs were done perfectly so that when I broke the yolks they soaked the corn tortilla below. The tortilla was thicker than I'm used to, but it was good, it does a good job of absorbing the runny yolk. I'm also glad that they didn't drown it in cheese like other places. The huevos ranchero's themselves get 4 stars. The side of black beans that it comes with just sucked, tasted like boiled black beans with a little bit of salt , 1 star. Cheese pupusa - was ok, nothing spectacular, it was warm and had gooey cheese, 3 stars. Pupusa con loroco - never heard of this before, loroco is an edible herb found in central america. At first I didn't really taste a difference. But it actually tasted better after the pupusa sat around a bit, felt like it got crunchier and the cheese and loroco flavors blended. The texture became somewhat crispy, I like...3.5 stars. Tamal de elote - 4 stars, this was the star of the meal. A rectangular piece of mashed corn and flour. It was moist, slight corn sweetness and creaminess, reminded me of Bolivian humintas. Yum!! I will have to go back here and try out the tacos and burritos, feels promising!

20 minutes up the road from Capitol Hill inside a non-descript road-side shopping center, Ann Cashion is taking a beating. More precisely, Ann Cashion's food is taking a beating. And more precisely still, Ann Cashion's much heralded Tacqueria Nacional is getting pummeled and is down for the count. Yeah, you read that right. Little-known Sabor is letting its food do the talking. And the talk is backed up by the goods. Did I happen to mention Sabor is cheap? But only in price. The pupusas here are amazing. Ditto the tacos and the fajitas. Everything is fresh and made to exacting order. What a great little spot. Authentic and excellent and so far, seemingly unknown (we were the only ones there this evening.) Thats a grave error -- if youre looking for real deal latin food - Sabor is the spot.

I walked to Sabor Latino in the rain on Sunday afternoon. I didn't recognize most of the things on the menu. My knowledge of Latino food in general and Salvadorean food in particular is limited. I ended up ordering the Fajita platter, to go. It took a while for them to prepare my food, 20 - 30 minutes. They weren't crazy busy but I guess they made it all from scratch, including the tortillas. It was all very good. My only qualm would be that they didn't give me enough tortillas to go with all the pollo I got. Just three tortillas, and not very big ones at that. Still it was more than enough food for me. I've got leftovers for tonight. I went to Giant later and bought some more tortillas. I'll have to try something else next time I get a meal from Sabor Latino.

At Sabor I closed my eyes, opened my mouth and reached corn heaven with their tamal de elote. Slightly crunchy on the outside, tender and moist on the inside, big chunks of corn, their inherent sweetness countered by sour crema supplied for dipping. Interestingly, later that week I dined at the highly esteemed WD-50 in nyc ( yelp.com/biz/wd-50-new-y… ) where I had cornbread pudding for dessert; I have to say that i might have preferred the tamal from Sabor, not bad considering it was like $100 less. Though I'd have to say don't make the trip out there for the tamal alone, everything else I had on me one and only trip to Sabor was similarly delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed my torta con milanesa. The tacos were just like they make back home in TJ, a good pile of meat with a dusting of veggies, good carne asada and nice tortillas. The pupusas were pretty good too. Had the pork one (good) and the squash flower and cheese (better). A more than filling lunch for two for under $20 and i left a happy man. Since Sabor is a bit off the beaten path, well at least not in the middle of the city, I doubt it will ever be overrun with skinny pants hipsters who read about the next great hole in the wall, which will hopefully keep their food honest, cheap and tastey.

Sabor is not strictly carry out, but a wonderful little Latin American restaurant in a small and dumpy strip mall. Jorge Chicas (from Zatinya) helps run the place with his brother and mother. Almost every time I have eaten there I've heard this loud pounding from the kitchen. It took me a few minutes to figure out what is was. But then, I noticed all the tortillas they both serve to diners and sell in bulk. It's the machine pounding out tortillas - which are wonderful. They also have folks in the back doing hand made tortillas. These are thicker than the others and have a very corn-y taste. The place itself is nothing to look at - very basic, probably about 10 tables. From the 5-6 times I've eaten there so far, most of their clientele is Latino. Spanish is certainly the dominant language spoken, but the last couple times I have been, the waitresses working had a good grasp of english - i can't say that for the first few visits. But even those still worked out OK. I did not end up with a tongue or a hoof on my plate. Anyway, I highly recommend it. The pupusas are great, along with the taquitos and tostadas. I haven't had the soup yet, but it looked great too. For you boozers, no alcohol is served. But you have your choice of Jarrito's or cola champagne - an acquired taste. Sabor is easy to miss. The little strip mall is at the NE corner of Piney Branch and Flower - across from the liquor store. Now go and enjoy!

my experience here was a 4. the food clocks in at a 3.5 a few friends and I had some 1030 oclock postbourbonandcoke munchies and it was time for some BBQ. we walked to rib pit (right across the street from sabor) only to find out it was closed. we trudged down the block and came across a few divey latino restuarants until i came up on some pretty buff el salvadorian homie with silver teeth who told me that el sabor es donde esta la fiesta. locally recommended dining. we got frisked when we entered, which made me feel safe and intrigued. we were sat at a table next to a completely passed out 40 yearold guy all by himself. the food here is actually pretty good. you MUST get the Regia beers, they are like 32 OZs and im pretty sure its malt liqour, ice cold. the glasses were frosted. and a friend had a well poured margarita. i ordered the chuleta (pork chop) even though the waitress recommended the lomo (loin). it was really tasty, soft and covered in a hearty tomato, pepper, onion, white wine garlic sauce. the tamales here ARE as good as people say they are, softer and lighter than your average tamale, id say go for the ones filled with chicken. the pupusas could be a little better, the slaw was a little weak. id stick to the pork items on the menu, their rice and beans seem to come with every menu item and are pretty good. the beans are especially gooey. i tried the carnitas (beef tips) however they were served as a plate of only meat and no garnishments. (kinda weird) eventually a totally (not)(but seriously)awesome latinohappymusic band started playing around 11PM, they were super authentic and i could imagine some megagangster walking into the place with a machine gun and mowing the place down to this incredibly happy soundtrack of octave basslines, synth stabs, and male falsetto yodeling. and i mean that in an earnest way.
